Branchespecifieke onderwerpen
Cotance heeft het volgende standpunt hierover ingenomen: CrVI must already be absent in leather having regard to the German legal ban. Our operators comply with this requirement following the test methodology EN ISO 17075, agreed worldwide among leather experts (for Europe at CEN level), even if no European legislation is in force on this specific matter. EN ISO 17075 fixes the absence when the result is under 3 mg/kg, which guarantees the "absence" (except detectable traces) with a reliable chemical analysis of leather, footweare, upholstery, leather goods and of any article made with leather. A similar test method, based on the same principles, is also used for CrVI analysis on textiles. No other workable, official and tested methods for Cr VI are currently available. Furthermore, CrVI is not used (and has no use) in the tanning process made in UE. The tanning industry, since the 80's, had to comply with clients requirements stating that leather should not contain CrVI. The proof of being "undetectable" is given by the EN ISO 17075. We also would like to underline that "absolute absence" has no chemical meaning and is not realistic, as traces of every element included in Mendeleev table can be found in every natural materials. Therefore, the EU tanning industry already faced the problem and at present a CrVI restriction will not affect EU leather production for the stated reasons.
- REACH - Further 6 Substances subject to authorisation 17 February 2011
The Commission has banned six substances used in industry because of their toxicity or carcinogenicity The six substances are: Musk xylene, diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), bis (2-ethylexyl) phthalate (DEHP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Used by the cosmetic, construction, textile, leather and automobile industries, they are carcinogenic or toxic to reproduction, persistent in the environment and accumulate in living organisms. Consequently, said sub- stances have become subject to authorization, with the aim being to allow for them to be gradually replaced by others that are economically and technically viable.
